About the MSc in Urban Science, Planning and Policy

The Master of Science in Urban Science, Policy and Planning (USPP) is a 12-month intensive programme featuring an integrated, hands-on curriculum designed and taught by SUTD’s multi-disciplinary faculty – aimed at training the next generation of urban researchers, analysts and practitioners who are well grounded in urban theory, skilled in urban data and analytics, and adept at urban policy and planning.

The USPP programme responds to a new paradigm of rapidly expanding, globally connected cities and enables students to develop novel solutions to urban challenges such as sustainable mobility, inclusive urban growth and new modes of governance for the 21st century. Students combine advanced social and data science research methods and computational techniques with urban theory, planning and practice to explore current and emerging topics and shape the cities of the future.

This programme is jointly organized by the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities (LKYCIC) and the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) cluster.

Data analytics, modelling and simulation are an increasingly important foundation for the next generation of urban planners. At the same time, urban policy and planning is very dynamic and requires deep understanding of the geo-political, social, cultural and economic aspirations of the cities. By bridging these two spheres, graduates will be well-prepared to plan and shape the cities of the future.

Singapore is often regarded as a global leader in urban planning and development, and has inspired scholars and practitioners the world over with its quick and structured ascent to become a modern and well-run city. Now, as society evolves, and as technological and other advances exert their influence on urban development, Singapore is once again faced with the opportunity to leverage its considerable experience in urban governance and technological and engineering expertise to continue to lead in urban science and policy for the coming century.

Studying at the Singapore University of Technology and Design

The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) is Singapore’s fourth autonomous university and one of the first universities in the world to incorporate the art and science of design and technology into a multi-disciplinary curriculum.

SUTD was established to advance knowledge and nurture technically grounded leaders and innovators to serve societal needs and create a better world by design.

The university is located in the Upper Changi area of Singapore, and is well connected to the city via public transport. The unique campus was designed to encourage interaction and collaboration, and boasts world class facilities such as the FabLab and the International Design Centre to design, prototype and test innovative urban solutions in the real world.
